O.S. EPROMs (Firmware)
While the actual Operating System (O.S.) for the Ensoniq samplers is contained on a floppy disk,
two EPROM chips on the main circuit board contain the firmware, the more basic operating
instructions for the keyboard. As with the O.S. disks, it is a good idea to have the latest
version of the firmware installed in your sampler to maximize its capabilities. For example,
you must have the 2.40 firmware installed in an EPS keyboard in order to use SCSI. We do not sell the firmware
for the EPS-16 Plus, as version 1.0 was the latest release; in other words, all EPS-16 Plus samplers
already contain the latest version.
Note that the current O.S. disks may be incompatible with earlier versions of the firmware. In
other words, if you purchase an O.S. disk and your sampler has a very early version of the
firmware, it may not boot up (you will get an INCOMPATIBLE OS VERSION message). To
check your firmware version, press Command then Env 1; the display will read "NO COMMANDS ON
PAGE," but that's not really true - it's a "secret" page where the diagnostic software
resides. Scroll to the right until you see the SOFTWARE INFORMATION page, and press Enter.
The display will show the current RAM VERSION (the disk O.S. version you booted up with).
Press Enter again to see the ROM VERSION (the firmware version).
The EPROM sets listed here contain the latest firmware versions. (The pricing below
requires the trade-in of your old chips; a $10.00 chip charge is added to all EPROM orders,
and this fee will be refunded upon the return of the old chips.)
