Operating System (O.S.)
Memory
The MPC60 and MPC60II can only be expanded by installing a 750k RAM expansion board.
The MPC1000 comes stock with 16 Meg of onboard RAM. You can expand the memory by adding
the EXP128 expansion card, which takes it up to 128 Meg.
The MPC2000 and MPC2000XL come stock with 2 Meg of memory, which resides on the main
circuit board. They also have two open slots for 72-pin SIMMs (70 ns or faster). You can expand the memory by
adding either one or two 16-Meg SIMMs. When two 16-Meg SIMMs are used, the on-board
2 Meg is ignored (i.e. the sampler will not recognize 34 Meg of memory).
The MPC3000 comes stock with 2 Meg of memory,
which resides on a proprietary circuit board. It also has two open slots for
30-pin SIMMs. You can expand the memory by: (a) adding either two 1-Meg or
two 4-Meg SIMMs, and (b) by replacing the 2-Meg memory board with an 8-Meg board.
SCSI and SCSI Drives
The MPC2000, MPC2000XL, and MPC3000 will all work with the Iomega Zip 100 and Zip 250 drives.
Loading Sounds from Other Samplers
The MPC1000 loads its sample data as WAV files, either from
Type 2 Compact Flash cards (it is compatible with cards up to 2 Gig in size) or by connecting
it via USB directly to a computer. The MPC1000 will also load SEQ and PGM files from the
MPC2000xl, but only pad assignments will translate from the PGM file; most other programming is ignored.
The MPC2000 will load MPC60, MPC60II, and MPC3000 sounds and
sequences from floppy disks, and will also load S1000, S1100, S3000, and S3000XL sounds from
floppy disk or CD-ROM. Sounds can also be imported from E-mu EIIIX and Roland S750 and S760
CD-ROMs, if the MPC2000 is using O.S. version 1.5 or later. All samples must be at a 44.1 kHz
sample rate. The MPC2000 can also load WAV files (22.05 or 44.1 kHz, 16-bit samples only).
The MPC4000 will load MPC2000, MPC2000XL, and MPC3000 sounds
from CD-ROM. It will also load sounds and sequences from either floppy disk or Zip disk via
the USB port (the MPC4000 has no floppy drive). There have been problems loading MPC2000 and
MPC3000 sounds into an MPC4000 using earlier O.S. versions, though. You should definitely
have the latest O.S. (downloadable from www.akaipro.com) in your MPC4000 if you plan to do this.

The MPC's Operating System (O.S.) tells the sampler how to work;
it is always a good idea to use the latest version available, as each release fixes bugs
and often adds new features. You can download these O.S. files from
www.akaipro.com. The latest O.S. versions are:

You can purchase memory expanders for most of the MPC samplers from
Syntaur Productions.
Instead of loading and saving sounds to floppy disks, you can make a
fabulous upgrade by using an external SCSI drive with your sampler. A SCSI drive will not
change the way your sampler works - it won't make better or longer samples - but it will
provide enormously faster loading time for sounds, and a very convenient way to store and
organize your sounds. Additionally, if you add a SCSI CD-ROM drive, you can purchase sounds on
CD-ROM for much cheaper than the same sounds would cost on floppy disks (one CD-ROM holds the
equivalent of hundreds of floppy disks worth of data). An MPC3000, however, will not
recognize a CD-ROM drive.
The MPC60 and MPC60II will not load any of the sounds
that we sell, even with the Roger Linn MPC3000 upgrade. The disk drive in these
samplers is a double-density (DS/DD) drive, and it will not read the high-density disks that we sell.
In order to load MPC3000 sounds into an upgraded MPC60, you must first format a DS/DD disk
on the MPC60, then save sounds to this disk using the MPC3000. We have heard that you can
load our sounds into an upgraded MPC60 via SCSI, but we cannot guarantee compatibility as such.
